Nobody knows how the Boston Red Sox’s offseason additions of Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval will play out, though there’s no denying the franchise is spending every cent in their deep pockets this offseason.
In addition to Ramirez and Sandoval, Boston’s front office has been hot on the heels of ace pitcher Jon Lester, who the team traded away before the deadline last season. Now the hope is that a reunion is in the works, though Lester is drawing significant interest from other teams as well.
Considering that, if Lester is to sign elsewhere the Boston Red Sox need a backup plan in place and that is apparently Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Working in the Boston Red Sox’s favor is the fact they have so many high level prospects who are now blocked by the recent big money additions. Given that, they have the pieces needed to make such a trade assuming the price is right.
The Philadelphia Phillies meanwhile have held out strong for at least three big name prospects, a price which might even been too steep for the Red Sox who would likely try to bring the cost down to trade for Cole Hamels.
Regardless, even if the Boston Red Sox don’t end up with Jon Lester, it appears they’re going to be bringing in a top of the rotation starting pitcher.
Clearly, it’s a good time to be a Red Sox fan – unless you’re stuck paying the high ticket prices to afford the new talent.
