Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles said what Chiefs players and coaches wouldn’t; the refs cost them their Week 14 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Andy Reid wouldn’t say it. Neither would Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. But running back Jamaal Charles had no problem telling it how he saw it after the team’s Week 14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

“The reason why we lost is the refs didn’t go our way,” Charles said, per ESPN.

There were two major calls in question, neither of which coach Reid would directly address, saying he had to watch the film once more. First, there was an Anthony Fasano touchdown called back because Cardinals linebacker Larry Foote appeared hurt (appeared being the key word). Then there was a Travis Kelce catch in which Kelce looked down while possessing the ball, but the refs called it a fumble after further review.

While Kelce didn’t bite in post-game comments, what he didn’t say was just as telling. “It was a call,” Kelce simply said.

Andy Reid was a little more direct, but offered roughly the same answer when asked about the refs’ performance. “I can’t comment on the officials,” Reid said. “We all have to do our jobs and do them to the best of our ability. Go on to something else, besides the officials. I don’t have anything good to say.”

Even more biting for the Chiefs was what ensued beyond those penalties. After Fasano’s penalty was called back, QB Alex Smith threw an interception just a few plays later.

“Whenever a touchdown is taken away in a key situation, it’s going to be emotional,” Fasano said, in a statement that stands as all the evidence he needs that he could run for political office.

Yes, it’s clear the Chiefs are steamed about their loss, but only Jamaal Charles would tell it how it is. Now we’ll see if doing so costs him a fine from the NFL.
