The St. Louis Cardinals have a mix of both young and aging talented starters, which is why they could be looking for another rotational arm.

Who would they be targeting, though? They wouldn’t really spend upwards of $200 million dollars on Max Scherzer, would they? Perhaps as CBS Sports reports the St. Louis Cardinals have shown interest in signing the ace pitcher and he’s already spoken to current and/or former players who’ve been recruiting him.

"The Cardinals met at some point on Scherzer, and word is that at least a couple of Cardinals players or former players have called Scherzer to make a pitch about the team. Scherzer, as a product of suburban Chesterfield, Mo., Parkway Central and the University of Missouri, obviously is already familiar with the town."

Having an additional top of the rotation starter to go alongside Adam Wainwright would be a huge addition for the St. Louis Cardinals. Combine that with their young starting pitching and there’s little reason to believe the Cardinals wouldn’t be among the favorites for the National League crown next season.

Of course, despite being a Missouri native, it’s not known if the St. Louis Cardinals would be able to afford Max Scherzer. Could he be willing to give them a discount considering he’s from the area? That’s entirely possible though there’s been no suggestion of such at this point.

It appears to be a bit of a long shot though discounting the St. Louis Cardinals, who are routinely one of the best teams in baseball, would be a poor choice.

Should be an interesting few days with the MLB Winter Meetings set to begin soon.
