The Houston Rockets are ‘aggressively pursuing’ trades in effort to unload their trade exceptions acquired in previous deals.

Despite missing All-Star center Dwight Howard for a multitude of games and losing a significant amount of their roster during the offseason, the Houston Rockets sit at an impressive 16-4.

That record currently has them holding the Western Conference’s fourth seed and they’re just percentage points from being ranked second overall.

Still, that isn’t enough for general manager Daryl Morey who apparently is ‘aggressively pursuing’ trades, most of which involve the Houston Rockets’ trade exceptions.

"The Houston Rockets are aggressively pursuing deals to use their $8.4 million trade exception before Dec. 19, league sources told Yahoo Sports.Rival executives say that Houston’s front office has been active in searching out deals in recent days and wants an acquisition completed within the 60-day reaggregation window before the Feb. 19 NBA trade deadline."

Why the rush on attempting to acquire a player? According to Yahoo Sports, the Rockets want the ability to potentially trade away the player(s) they would receive in a trade exception deal this season.

That’s actually a great strategy as the exceptions do eventually expire and so often we see teams wait until the last minute, unable to strike a deal because they waited too long to use the exception.

Of course when you’re one of the NBA’s best teams, you want to be extremely careful in regards to the moves you make as you don’t want to upset the roster chemistry. However if the acquired player was expected to be traded away, there’s really little risk to such.

It’s been said two teams believed they were working towards a deal with the Rockets though Houston is still looking for a better return.
