With Hanley Ramirez now a member of the Boston Red Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a hole on the left side of their infield.
Might that be filled by Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies? Just a few days ago, the veteran shortstop suggested that he wouldn’t likely waive his no trade clause, however the California native is apparently willing to do so for the Dodgers as noted by Jon Heyman.
"Longtime Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is said to be willing to consent to be traded to the Dodgers if the teams could work things out. It isn’t known how likely a Rollins deal is with the Dodgers, but a person familiar with the situation said there’s at least some chance it could happen."
Jimmy Rollins isn’t exactly the same player he once was, though the free agent market for shortstops is relatively thin and the trade market isn’t much better either. Also benefiting the Dodgers is Jimmy Rollins hefty salary and age as there’s simply no way the Phillies can ask for much in regards to prospects.
Of course Rollins doesn’t come without his warts as his range at shortstop is greatly diminished and he’s only hit over .252 once in the past six seasons. That said, he takes a significant amount of walks so his on base percentage is far greater than his batting average would lead one to believe.
By no stretch would the addition of Jimmy Rollins be a coup for the Los Angeles Dodgers, though considering what else is available on the market, they’re going to find it difficult to find anything better.
It does not appear any trade is imminent, but Rollins willingness to play in Southern California has to be viewed as a good thing by the Dodgers.
