Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone announced that veteran QB Kyle Orton would remain the team’s starter despite their slim odds of making the playoffs.

The Buffalo Bills are essentially toast in the AFC playoff race. At 7-6, they are simply looking up too many teams — many of which have tiebreakers on Buffalo — to realistically expect to make the NFL playoffs. But realistic is apparently only part of the equation as coach Doug Marrone has announced the team will stand pat with starting QB Kyle Orton over second-year EJ Manuel even as the team stands mired in what will soon be their 15th straight season without a playoff berth.

When asked if he would give Manuel some reps if the team was eliminated from the playoffs, Marrone said, per ESPN, “If I get to 7-8, I’ll make that decision. But right now, absolutely, I will play Kyle Orton because he gives us the best chance to win now.”

Sure, that’s great, but who cares what happens right now? The Bills are cooked because they don’t have an answer at quarterback. Literally every other position on this team is manned by someone capable of taking this team to the playoffs…except the QB…and we know what Kyle Orton is. Like, that’s not changing ever, and maybe Manuel could change a little. So maybe we could see the guy we know less about?

Of course, Marrone answered with the usual forehead-slap-inducing coachspeak for which all NFL coaches are so well known.

“I will say this: My job right now is to win a football game. And that’s how I see it. So I’m doing the best job I can to win a football game, plain and simple.”

Ugh. Never mind. Carry on, Buffalo Bills, and don’t mind us over here.
