For once, it seems the pressure to get better is bubbling up from the small market, small payroll teams at the bottom of the league rather than getting pushed from the top down. This is seen in the moves made by the Cubs, Marlins and Mariners with the Minnesota Twins getting in on the action as well.
According to the Star Tribune, the Twins have decided to break out the check book and have signed starting pitcher Ervin Santana to a $54 million deal.
The addition of Santana means that the Twins are serious about contending in an ever competitive AL Central that has already seen the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals begin to load up on players to retool their playoff rosters. The Chicago White Sox made a deal to acquire Jeff Samardzija this week and the Indians are looking at deals too.
This put pressure on the Twins, who are in their first year without manager Ron Gardenhire, to make moves to get better now. Their rotation will now be anchored by Phil Hughes and Ervin Santana, with a lineup many are hoping will continue to make the AL Central one of the best divisions in baseball.
