When the Cleveland Cavaliers brought in LeBron James and Kevin Love this past offseason, Dion Waiters seemingly believed his role on the team would not change.
Why that thought ever crept into his mind was unknown, but it was clear that Waiters would become the odd-man out with the new additions. That’s not to say the Cavs would forget about their young guard, but he was no longer going to be the ball-pounding scorer that he was last season.
He’d now become a bench player who was expected to sit in the corner and knock down jumpers.
That didn’t sit well with the former first-round selection who quickly became the subject of trade rumors. However the guard has improved his play as of late, suggesting it was an attitude adjustment which helped him move forward.
“I would be mad before I even got in the game,” Waiters told Northeast Ohio Media Group. “I was mad, [but] it is what it is.”
Waiters continued, “I just had to do my job, continue to keep working, [and] putting in the extra hours of work,” he said. “Staying with it and it’s paying off.”
Perhaps it’s just a coincidence that the Cleveland Cavaliers starting winning once Dion Waiters accepted his new role, but whatever the case things certainly seem to be working with the Cavs right now.
Assuming Dion Waiters continues to thrive in his bench role, it adds a new weapon to an already stacked Cleveland team and one that will benefit them greatly moving forward.
