If you’re a fan of the NFL’s current playoff system, enjoy it because this is likely the last season you’ll see it used in its current form.
That’s the word from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen who says the league is expected to vote on new playoff changes which would be implemented for the 2015 season. Included in the alleged changes would be the addition of two more teams along with re-seeding.
"One formula that will be discussed in the offseason is that in addition to first-round byes for the teams with the best record in the AFC and NFC, two divisional champions in each conference will get home games and the remaining 8 teams will be seeded by win-loss record."
There has previously been discussion about re-seeding playoff teams, though it was thought the idea didn’t have much momentum considering NFL owners wanted teams who won their division to be rewarded with a home game.
However after watching the NFC South vomit on their own shoes this year, perhaps the owners will be more willing to vote for the re-seeding.
According to Mortensen, expansion of 12 to 14 playoff teams along with re-seeding is likely to pass.
It’s been nearly 25-years since the NFL expanded from 10 to 12 playoff teams and that has worked wonders, so you can’t help but think this will do more of the same. Yes, there will be an argument about watering down the postseason with teams who many not deserve a postseason birth though the addition of two more teams will increase fan interest for teams who would normally be out of the playoff race.
