Dallas Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones said that running back DeMarco Murray could still play Week 16 after having his hand surgically repaired this week.

The Dallas Cowboys might have guessed they’d be without running back DeMarco Murray for at least the regular season after he required surgery on a broken left hand. It appears no one is making that guess though. Owner and GM Jerry Jones said this week that he believes Murray could play on Sunday, but that the Cowboys will be fine one way or another.

Jones told KRLD-FM, per Jon Machota at the Dallas Morning News, that ‘it’s not unrealistic’ that Murray could play Sunday. He also noted that Murray wouldn’t need to practice in order to be deemed ready to play. He’d just have to be healed, which could make this week a little easier to prep for on the running back’s end.

Jones also said that running back is arguably the team’s deepest position, so even if DeMarco Murray doesn’t make the start, the team shouldn’t miss a beat.

It’s hard to tell if Joseph Randle or Lance Dunbar are capable of filling in for the leading rusher in the NFL, given that we’ve only seen these two for a combined 60 carries as opposed to the 350 times Murray has carried the rock this season, but we may have little choice in the matter.

Despite Jones’ bold claims, it’s hard to imagine a running back suffering a broken hand one week, then playing the next. For now anyways, we’ll take this with a grain of salt as the Cowboys could just be trying to keep the Indianapolis Colts honest in their game planning in advance of their Week 16 matchup.
