The Dallas Cowboys won a big game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, but it came at a cost as running back DeMarco Murray broke his hand and will need surgery.

DeMarco Murray is one of the best running backs in the NFL and currently the leading rusher in the league. That being said, he’s not invincible and could miss some time this week after breaking a bone in his hand.

Following the Cowboys win over the Eagles on Sunday night, the team announced that Murray had suffered a broken bone in his hand and would need surgery to fix it.

Todd Archer from ESPN Dallas confirmed this report, as Murray indeed has a broken bone in his hand which will require him to undergo surgery this week. That being said, Murray’s status for Week 16 against the Colts is still up in the air.

Murray is leading the NFL in rushing yards by more than a mile at this point in the season, and as the NBC broadcast said last night, barring a disaster he’s going to win the rushing title. Perhaps we all spoke too soon as the broken bone in Murray’s hand is not something to sneeze at, but it might also not be that big of a deal.

The Cowboys need to win out this season to ensure their trip to the postseason, but losing Murray for even a game could prove fatal. He very well could wrap his hand, but that’s not something you want a running back to do.

What Murray is likely to do is sit out Week 16 against the Colts and come back for a Week 17 game the Cowboys will need to win to make sure their in as comfortable a position as possible in the postseason this year — preferably with a healthy-as-possible Murray.
