Former All-Star closer Brian Wilson has been released by the Los Angeles Dodgers to sign Brandon McCarthy.

More from Los Angeles Dodgers

It’s been a mighty fall from grace for three-time All-Star closer Brian Wilson.

Once the face of the San Francisco Giants franchise, Wilson and his eccentric personality decided to leave the organization after they refused to guarantee his contract after his second Tommy John surgery. That lead to an unhappy Wilson spurning the Giants and signing with long-time rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

That marriage didn’t work out very well though as Wilson, who served in a set-up role, struggled routinely and today was given his walking papers as the Los Angeles Dodgers released the closer on Tuesday afternoon.

Wilson, during the San Francisco Giants’ 2010 World Series run was not only one of the most popular players in baseball but was also one of the most dominating at his position. However an injury in early 2012 resulted in Wilson missing the rest of the season and eventually leading to Wilson signing with the Dodgers.

The one time closer made waves not only on the field with Los Angeles due to his struggles but also was involved in a shouting match with San Francisco Giants owner Larry Baer over the lack of presentation for his 2012 World Series ring.

It’s not known if Brian Wilson willl attempt to continue his playing career, though the Los Angeles Dodgers are on the hook to pay the $10 million dollars of his remaining salary which comes off the books at season end.

The move will allow newly signed starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy to be placed on the Dodgers 40-man roster.
