With Jon Lester off the market, the best available pitcher is Max Scherzer, though teams aren’t exactly lining up to obtain the services of the former Detroit Tigers ace.
Part of that is due to his absurd salary demands which are said to top $200 million dollars. Yes, there are plenty of teams that would love Scherzer anchoring their starting pitching rotation, but not at such a price tag.
That includes the New York Yankees who are said to be on the outside looking in regarding their courting of the starting pitcher.
There’s always the chance this could be a ploy on the New York Yankees part as they hope to get agent Scott Boras to drop Max Scherzer’s asking price, but it seems likely a team will break the bank for the pitcher at some point.
The St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants have also been linked to Max Scherzer but they’re probably more suited for a run at James Shields who will come at much cheaper price.
As for Scherzer, it’s been rumored that he’s willing to wait until well after the new year to sign so it’s very possible he may remain on the open market for some time.
Perhaps things will change and the New York Yankees will re-enter the process but for now it seems as if they’re not interested as opposed to laying in the weeds as some had suspected.
