The New York Knicks know they don’t have much to trade outside of cap relief, so obtaining Greg Monroe in a mid-season acquisition seems extremely unlikely.
What they will have come season end though is a vast amount of cap room and it’s possible the Detroit Pistons center could be one of their targets.
That’s the word from USA Today who suggests it wouldn’t be shocking to see the New York Knicks target Greg Monroe in free agency once the season concludes.
"Monroe is averaging 15 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists and has eight double-doubles. Atlanta had interest in the summer and may have interest again in July. It’s also not a stretch to picture Monroe with the New York Knicks and the triangle offense. But there will be other teams looking for a big man, too."
The former Georgetown product would not only be a huge upgrade for the New York Knicks’ sub par front court but would also fit the triangle well thanks to his passing and shooting ability.
Earlier today, there were reports the Detroit Pistons attempted to trade Greg Monroe to the Atlanta Hawks this past offseason but were rebuffed in such efforts.
As for the New York Knicks, there’s really little reason not to extend a hand to Monroe who will be an unrestricted free agent at season end. He’s probably not a franchise pillar, but he’s certainly an elite building block and would pair very well with Carmelo Anthony as he doesn’t always need the ball to be effective.
For now it appears to be more speculation than anything, though connecting the dots seems to suggest Greg Monroe will likely be a target of the New York Knicks.
