The defense of Kevin Durant’s MVP is not going so well as the Oklahoma City small forward has been slowed by injury this year that kept him out for the first 17 games of the year with a foot injury and now the reigning MVP is dealing with a sprained ankle that will cost him a second straight game.
Durant sprained his ankle in the closing seconds of the first half against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday and was held out of Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, Durant is going to be held out of Sunday’s game against Anthony Davis and the Pelicans.
The injury came as Durant was having his finest game of the year with 30 points in the first two quarters. Durant is only averaging 22.4 points per game this year in nine games after averaging a career-high 32 last season when he won his first MVP.
Oklahoma City is in 10th place in the Western Conference, but only trail the Pelicans by one game for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Yes, it is very early to begin talking about playoff positioning, but they have won eight of their last 10 games and a win on Sunday without Durant will continue their upward trend.
Perry Jones started in place of Durant on Friday but failed to score a point in 12 minutes.
