Record vs. Bowl Teams: 1-3
Common Opponents:
Connecticut: BYU won in Storrs by 25 points. Memphis won at home by 31. Advantage: PUSH
Houston: BYU beat them by eight points at home. Memphis lost at home by four. Advantage: BYU
Middle Tennessee State: BYU won by 20 in Murfreesboro. Memphis won at home by 19. Advantage: BYU
Prediction:
It was really a tale of two seasons for BYU. They were nowhere near the same team for the first month without Taysom Hill. Even though they won their last three games, it wasn’t easy, except for the cakewalk that was the Savannah State game. The Cougars have learned how to function without him, but they don’t have the offensive explosiveness that they did earlier in the season. All three of the common opponents that these teams shared were beaten by BYU before Hill got hurt, so that really doesn’t tell us as much as it should.
People started to see the writing on the wall when Memphis came really close to stunning UCLA in Los Angeles in week two. Any notion of that being a fluke was dispelled when the Tigers hammered Cincinnati in Cincinnati.
Even the most loyal BYU fan has to admit that something is lacking without Hill. I think this game stays close, but I have to believe that Memphis is just the better team right now.
Pick: Memphis
