Common Opponents:
NONE
Prediction:
Central Michigan beat Purdue handily, then turns around and loses to a pretty bad Kansas team. Three weeks later they beat eventual MAC Champion Northern Illinois in DeKalb. They lost to two teams that didn’t make a bowl. Consistency was not a strong suit for the Chippewas this year.
Western Kentucky has a high powered offense that is a whole lot of fun to watch. The downside is that it puts a big strain on their defense, and when you are a team that doesn’t have great athletes, bad things can happen. The Hilltoppers gave up a whopping 39.3 points per game this season, which is 122nd out of 126 teams. They were also sixth in scoring at 44 points per game.
We don’t really have a measuring stick because these teams didn’t play each other. Still, Western Kentucky’s gutsy two point conversion to beat #24 Marshall is the best win for either team. Western Kentucky also lost games they shouldn’t have to UAB and FAU, and were absolutely destroyed by Louisiana Tech.
The best measuring stick then is conference strength. I’ve talked before about how weak the MAC is compared to recent years. The Sun Belt was one of the best of the rest this season. The advantage has to go to the Sun Belt.
Pick: Western Kentucky
