Steven Jackson Not Expected to Play vs. Carolina Panthers
The 31-year-old Jackson could be out for Sunday’s NFC South title game
The Atlanta Falcons play the Carolina Panthers this Sunday in Atlanta with the winner getting the NFC South crown and a spot in the playoffs, but the Falcons could be without starting running back Steven Jackson.
Jackson suffered a quadriceps injury in last Sunday’s 30-14 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Jackson has started all 15 games this season for the Falcons but he has missed consecutive practices this week with the quad injury.
Jackson hasn’t yet been officially ruled out for Sunday, as the Falcons want to see how he moves around the next couple of days. In the event that Steven Jackson can’t go for Sunday’s showdown against the Panthers, Jacquizz Rodgers, Devonta Freeman, and recently promoted Jerome Smith will get the touches.
Freeman had a big touchdown run last week and while Steven Jackson would be desired in a game of this magnitude, the coaching staff can see what they have in the rookie running back going forward.
The Falcons have depth at the running back position and that might pay off Sunday, but without their leading rusher, that’s a big blow going into a division championship game.
