The Green Bay Packers are duking it out with the Detroit Lions for the NFC North title at Lamebau Field. The Packers were enjoying a lofty 30-14 lead late in the game and the Lions were desperate for a comeback.
You knew the Lions would go for an onside kick, but I don’t think you could have predicted how they go about it. Instead of going for a place kick onside kick, they went for a punt.
That’s right, they punted on the kick off. The announcers calling the game pointed out the legality, saying the receiving team could call for a fair catch but if they are unable to do so it becomes a live ball.
Then it went on and worked and the Lions recovered the ball. It is such an unusual play that the announcers themselves said they couldn’t recall seeing it before, but given how easily it seemed to work for the Lions you have to wonder why more teams don’t use it.
After this more teams might begin to start copying this concept and try it a little bit more frequently.
