New York Jets Owner Would Welcome Back Darrelle Revis

The owner of the New York Jets, Woody Johnson, has stated that the team would welcome back CB Darrelle Revis, should they be able to sign him this off-season.

As the NFL braces for the start of its postseason, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has decided to continue his domination of the early week headlines. Apparently, he did not want to part with CB Darrelle Revis. That is the sentiment he has tried to make clear in recent statements following the team’s firings of head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik.

Johnson spoke with reporters regarding a deal that Revis has reached with the rival New England Patriots back in March. “Darrelle is a great player and if I thought I could have gotten Darrelle for that, I probably would’ve taken him. And it was our best judgment to do what we did. Darrelle’s a great player — I’d love for Darrelle to come back.”

Revis, 29, has been one of the top coverage corners in the game for years now, and at his pinnacle with the Jets between 2009-11, he may very have been the best in the game. While he might not be as “shutdown” as he once was, he remains on an elite level with regards to his position, and the team would certainly benefit from his presence in the secondary, especially with the team surrendering 234.1 yards per game through the air, 14th in the league.

The Pats are not expected to pick up the $20 million option on Revis’s contract for 2015. However, the team will likely look to resign the 8 year veteran, as he has been an integral part of the team’s secondary; one its only true presences. New England was 17th in the league, giving up 239.8 yards per game in the passing game. If the news regarding Johnson’s mindset towards Revis is true, this off-season is already shaping up to be quite exciting.
