The player in question causing this sickness, one that has seen nearly 90,000 hits on YouTube and was also a Sportscenter Top 10 play, is Michael Porter, who is all of 16 years old, stands 6’9 and is still growing. Make no mistake, though: Porter isn’t just some casual long-limb player who is playing the game because he’s tall. Porter is an elite prospect and is already regarded as one of the top five players of the Class of 2017.
The small forward from Father Tolton Catholic High School in Columbia, Mo. has every major program in the country in pursuit of his skills, skills which have already drawn comparison to a young Kevin Durant. Missouri has the inside track, yet Kansas and Baylor are also hot on his trail. Indiana and Iowa have already offered Porter, who is already seeing his mailbox flooded.
Of course, no top-tier recruit goes past the watching eyes of Duke, which began to dial up its interest prior to Porter beginning his sophomore season. The next two-plus seasons will become interesting for college hoops recruiting junkies, as Porter will only get better. One can only envision ESPN’s Dick Vitale gushing over the potential of Porter, who could likely be a one and done en route to the NBA in 2018.
Porter’s dunk is just the tip of an iceberg that plans to float around the ocean of basketball for years to come.
