New Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is doing something new he didn’t do while he was the coach of the San Francisco 49ers, he’s not a part of the Twitterverse, joining the social media network on Friday.

Jim Harbaugh is back home in Ann Arbor where he starred as the Wolverines starting quarterback for three years under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler and is doing his best to fit in with his new peers on the college football landscape.

Like so many of his peers, Harbaugh has joined Twitter and is quickly gaining followers despite only one sending out one tweet.

Twitter has developed into an invaluable tool for many reasons. First of all it gives the coach another means to communicate with fans, alumni and recruits to show a different side of his personality that perhaps isn’t seen unless you’re behind closed doors.

Most importantly, it is a necessary tool in today’s social media age where so much communication is done electronically from our phones and mobile devices. Look at coaches like Les Miles, Butch Jones, Bret Bielema, among others who use Twitter to communicate directly to their rabid fan bases and build a connection with them.

Whether it was Harbaugh who set up the account himself or if it was even his idea to create the account is irrelevant. Although if I was a betting man I would think someone within the athletic department mentioned to Jim how it would be a great and fun idea to get him on Twitter. But nevertheless, whoever set it up did it right.

His avi is from his introductory press conference where Harbaugh had lost his voice but despite his voice cracking you could see the emotion on his face with a beaming smile and wide open eyes. The cover photo is a field shot among the Michigan players grouped on the field with a shot of The Big House crowd and the “Go Blue” sign in the background.

I really believe Harbaugh is going to have tremendous success at Michigan once he gets a couple recruiting classes in and he gets his players on campus. Just don’t expect a follow back as all of the 23 accounts he’s following are other Michigan sports accounts.
