The LSU Tigers kept the top recruit in the state of Louisiana home just as they did last year with Leonard Fournette and practically every other year as Les Miles got a commitment from wide receiver Tyron Johnson.

LSU loaded up on the recruiting trail last year in a historic crop of talent in the Pelican State with No. 1 overall recruit Leonard Fournette headlining a class that also included Malachi Dupre and Trey Quinn, among others as the Tigers had the nation’s No. 2 overall class.

Les Miles and his staff are building on last year’s haul with the addition of the top player in the state in Tyron Johnson (New Orleans, LA. Warren Easton) who is also the nation’s No. 2 wide receiver and the No. 21 overall recruit regardless of position, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The 6-1, 191-pound receiver made his announcement at the Under Armour All-American Game where he had a dominant week of practice where he looks to follow in the mold of former LSU receiver and NFL rookie phenom, Odell Beckham Jr with the ability to make the ridiculous one-handed catch look routine.

He picked LSU over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and is the 17th member of the 2015 class and the third five-star recruit, joining longtime commits in cornerback Kevin Tolliver, the nation’s No. 11 recruit and No. 30 recruit in offensive lineman Maea Teuhema who committed on signing day last year with his older brother Sione.

Johnson has 94 passes for 1,589 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior en route to earning class 4A All-State honors. His commitment is a significant one for LSU who lost to Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl earlier in the week and were in need of some good news leading up to national signing day in February, which is almost a national holiday in Baton Rouge where LSU is usually adding to their riches on the first Wednesday in February.

He should form a young nucleus that includes the aforementioned Dupre and Quinn as this offense could blossom into one we saw in 2013 when Beckham, Jarvis Landry, Jeremy Hill and Zach Mettenberger broke numerous program records.

Whether it is Anthony Jennings or Brandon Harris starting at quarterback for LSU next year they will have a dangerous weapon in Johnson to work with.

With today’s commitment of Johnson, LSU now has the nation’s No. 9 class overall and the No. 5 class in the SEC.
