A couple of Michigan students are taking advantage the momentous hire by creating a clothing line based on Harbaugh, as they are utilizing the phrase “Ann Arbaugh” on their apparel.
The “Ann Arbaugh” phrase is an obvious play on Harbaugh’s last name and Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the school is located.
Forbes is reporting the students have sold about 200 items and have made about $5,000 since Harbaugh was announced as the school’s head coach.
"The University of Michigan juniors are Zach Bruch and Ryan Luck, and the duo have already filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the phrase “ANN ARBAUGH.” It is a play on the words “Ann Arbor” and “Jim Harbaugh.” On the Ann Arbaugh website, Bruch and Luck are selling items containing the applied-for phrase as well as apparel displaying the words, “THE KHAKIS, THE KHAKIS, THE KHAKIS.” — a reference to the type of clothing that has become synonymous with Michigan’s new head football coach.Bruch and Luck believe that sales will ramp up now that students are returning to campus after the Winter Break. They are also thrilled with the feedback they have received thus far, with many purchasers including comments on their orders such as ”Go Blue” and “Welcome Home Coach.”“It’s almost a revitalization of school spirit,” said Luck. ”It’s nice to have positive buzz around Michigan football.”"
You gotta hand it to the students; this is a great idea.
As they note, there is a lot of buzz around the football program right now and Harbaugh, so one has to figure they’ll be able to make a solid profit behind the “Ann Arbaugh” phrase.
Michigan hired Harbaugh after a disappointing 5-7 season in 2014. The 51-year-old comes to the school after four seasons of coaching the San Francisco 49ers.
Harbaugh was one of the NFL’s most successful coaches during his four-year run in the league, averaging 11 regular seasons wins per season, making three consecutive NFC championship games and one Super Bowl.
Harbaugh played quarterback for Michigan from 1983-1986. For his career, he threw 31 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
