Everett Golson split time with Malik Zaire in the Music City Bowl and as a result he is considering transferring from Notre Dame and playing for the school he just helped beat in the bowl game in the LSU Tigers, according to NOLA.com’s Jim Kleinpeter.
Before LSU fans get too worked about the dual-threat quarterback who helped lead Notre Dame to the BCS Championship Game two years ago as a freshman and was a Heisman candidate the first six weeks of this season, there are some issues regarding his academic status.
"“LSU is exploring the possibility but would have to obtain a waiver from the conference office since Golson was declared academically ineligible for the 2013 season. The SEC rule allows graduate student transfers without waivers if the student maintained eligibility, had no significant disciplinary issues at the old school and earned all possible [Academic Progress Rate] points.”"
Golson said he is scheduled to graduate in May so he would be free to transfer and play immediately, so if LSU gives a green light to a potential transfer it would appear to be a nice match on paper.
LSU has rising junior Anthony Jennings who failed to establish himself this year and even lost his job, albeit temporarily to rising sophomore Brandon Harris who may be the fan’s choice to be the Tiger’s starter next year, but Golson is an attractive option.
Golson threw for 3,445 yards and 29 touchdowns, 1,327 more yards than LSU and 12 more scores than LSU threw all season. The knock on Golson this year was he faded down the stretch and had issues with turnovers for the better part of the season. He threw 14 interceptions on 427 attempts, or one every 30.5 attempts. LSU quarterbacks threw an interception every 30.4 attempts on average this year.
Playing in Cam Cameron’s system did wonders for Zach Mettenberger who starred in his one year under his tutelage, so if Golson wants to boost his NFL draft stock for the 2016 draft, one year with Cameron could be a tremendous recruiting tool.
LSU is loaded at the skill positions with the likes of Leonard Fournette, Malachi Dupre and Trey Quinn in addition to the recent commitment of five-star wide receiver Tyron Johnson, so whoever is under center for LSU next year will have a nice array of weapons.
For what it’s worth, Golson tweeted for the first time attempting to put some cold water on this report from NOLA.com.
