San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich could be the next coach of the Buffalo Bills. The team interviewed him Sunday.

Frank Reich could be returning to Buffalo. This time, as a coach.

The Buffalo Bills interviewed Reich, who was quarterback on the team from 1985-1994, for their head coaching vacancy on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Reich has spent the past two years coaching for the San Diego Chargers, in 2013 as the team’s quarterback coach and in 2014 as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Phillip Rivers enjoyed a career revitalization in 2013 under Reich’s tutelage, throwing for 4,478 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while leading the Chargers to a playoff appearance.

In 2014, with Reich running the entire offense, the Chargers ranked 10th in passing yards per game, 30th in rushing yards per game and 17th in scoring offense while San Diego went 9-7 and missed the postseason.

The Bills are believed to have significant interest in adding Reich, as Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News called him the team’s “top target.”

Bills legend Andre Reed campaigned for the team to sign Reich last week on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access.

I think he’d be a great head coach,” Reed said. “He knew a lot more about the offense, a lot more about the team than Jim Kelly even knew. When he came in there, we didn’t miss a beat. I think he would make — definitely would make a great head coach anywhere.

“He’s definitely a viable candidate. I think he would do a great job. Not only would he bring a lot of credibility, but Bills fans would probably — the roof would probably come off if he came in there and became the head coach. I’m definitely a proponent of him being the head coach there, if that’s the way and that’s what goes down.

Reich is one of the hottest head coaching candidates on the market these days. He’s also set to interview with the New York Jets this week, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network.

The Bills’ head coaching job became available after Doug Marrone unexpectedly stepped down from his post last week. Marrone, who led the team to a 9-7 record last season, had a special opt-out in his contract that allowed him to collect his 2015 salary even if he stepped down.
