The Oklahoma Sooners have reportedly shown offensive coordinator Josh Heupel the door on Tuesday.

The Oklahoma Sooners have parted ways on Tuesday with co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel, according to a report from Pete Thamel and Sports Illustrated. Heupel has been the offensive coordinator since the 2011 season when he received his promotion. He was also in charge of the quarterbacks.

Heupel’s firing comes after yet another season for the Sooners where expectations were not met. Although the team ranked 21st in scoring offense this season at 36.4 points per game, the passing game was less than stellar, ranking 85th with 203.5 points per game.

Not to mention that things this season, a year in which the Sooners were supposed to be in serious contention for a national championship, ended on the lowest of notes with Oklahoma scoring just six points in their blowout loss to the Clemson Tigers in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

Despite that, though, the move may come as a bit of a shock to some, especially considering the fact that Heupel has had a lot more bright moments play calling in Norman than he has disappointments. At this time, no candidates for a replacement have been named.

Heupel was the quarterback for head coach Bob Stoops and Oklahoma on the 2000 national championship team that defeated Florida State in the Orange Bowl.
