The sports world was saddened to learn of the passing of legendary ESPN sportscaster and anchor Stuart Scott on Sunday. Scott, 49, had been battling cancer since 2007. Scott was known by many sports fans alike for his trademark flare and catchphrases that brought a fresh new style to the field never seen before. Many credit the man for the delivery of most modern sportscasters. We will remember his patented “Boo Yah,” featured after big highlight plays. Very few will forget the phrase “cooler than the other side of the pillow,” which has become a staple in the American lexicon since Scott’s first mention of it on air those many years ago.
ESPN, as well as the rest of the sporting world, has been airing tributes to Scott all week thus far, and several notable athletes and broadcasters have been chiming in on the passing. Several other NBA players such as Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade called into the station to leave their condolences. In memory of Scott, fellow SportsCenter anchors Steve Levy and Scott Van Pelt sat next to an empty chair to honor their recently departed co-host. Rich Eisen and Dan Patrick, two of the men who worked with Scott for years during his early days with the network, took the time to honor his memory.
Scott’s impact on the world of sports came to ultimately transcend that world of American culture. United States president Barack Obama issued the following statement regarding Scott’s passing.
“I will miss Stuart Scott. Twenty years ago, Stu helped usher in a new way to talk about our favorite teams and the day’s best plays. For much of those twenty years, public service and campaigns have kept me from my family –- but wherever I went, I could flip on the TV and Stu and his colleagues on SportsCenter were there. Over the years, he entertained us, and in the end, he inspired us – with courage and love. Michelle and I offer our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and colleagues.”
On July 16, 2014, Scott received the Jimmy V Award at the ESPY’s and delivered perhaps one of the greatest speeches ever heard at the annual ceremony. Scott’s words were as follows. “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”
