Major League Soccer franchise the Los Angeles Galaxy have announced the signing of Liverpool captain and former England captain Steven Gerrard.

After rumors leaked on the internet that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was considering leaving the only club he has ever played for, his child hood team, he confirmed the reports. Gerrard said he wanted to clear the air so his team wouldn’t be distracted and confirmed it would be his last season with the club and he’d be playing in America.

Major League Soccer franchise the Los Angeles Galaxy emerged as the favorites to land Gerrard’s services, and almost as quickly as Gerrard confirmed the rumors that he was leaving Liverpool and the Premier League, those rumors were also confirmed.

“I’m very excited to begin the next chapter of my career in the United States with LA Galaxy,” Gerrard said in a news release on the club’s website. “The Galaxy are the most successful club in Major League Soccer history and I am looking forward to competing for more championships in the years to come. My discussions with Bruce Arena and Chris Klein were extremely positive and the future of the team is very bright. I am committed to helping the LA Galaxy compete for trophies and to having an impact in Los Angeles and I will give my all for the club. In the meantime, I will continue to give everything for Liverpool for the remainder of this season before joining up with the Galaxy.”

The Galaxy are coming off a MLS Cup title and certainly have proven to be a desirable club to join, being the first franchise in Major League Soccer to win five titles. They’ve also won the title in three of the past four seasons.

Gerrard will stay with Liverpool through the end of their season, which overlaps with the beginning of the Major League Soccer season. As it is planned now, Gerrard would join the Galaxy in July of 2015, during Major League’s Soccer summer transfer window. There are other hurdles for Gerrard to clear like the eceipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC), but those aren’t expected to be issues.

Details of the signing were not immediately disclosed but the club did confirm that Gerrard joined as a Designated Player. The Los Angeles Times reported the deal is for 18 months however.
