The Cleveland Browns were destined to make the playoffs due to drafting Johnny Manziel. Howver, Johnny Football was unimpressive in his rookie year. It appears his offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains both will not return due to a disagreement in his readiness.

Shanahan quit, while Loggains was fired.

According to SB Nation, “Shanahan reportedly felt pressured by the front office to insert Manziel into the starting lineup despite the offensive coordinator’s belief that the rookie wasn’t ready to handle the job.”

Manziel started two games during the 2014 season. His debut came against AFC North rival Cincinnati Bengals where they were skunked 30-0, and in his second game during Week 16 in a 17-13 loss against the Carolina Panthers.

There was no reason why Manziel earned the starting gig over Brian Hoyer other than pressure from the ownership. Manziel fever sold a lot of season tickets and jerseys, but the hype was never matched by his play on the field. Yet, his immaturity from his Texas A&M era carried over into the NFL and has become infectious. It appears Manziel thinks the NFL is all fun and games and his on-field performances at the college level will speak for him.

However, NFL teams care about off the field issues also.

Based on a small sample of two games, the Browns coaches were right in saying that Manziel wasn’t NFL ready.

Instead the Browns ownership only has money on the mind and filling those seats. Apparently for that to happen Manziel needs to be the starter, but for now they’ll never make the playoffs with Johnny Football under center. Hoyer’s play was a bright spot for the team in 2014 and he had a chance to lead Cleveland to a much-awaited playoff berth. In fact, they fizzled out at the end of the season and were the only AFC North team to not make the playoffs.

Now, the Browns will need to find a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach so they can try to make the playoffs in 2015. However, it’s unlikely many available coaches would want to coach in Cleveland based on this information; they’d get in another argument over Manizel’s NFL readiness and be strong-armed into starting the not so ready quarterback.

Sorry, Browns fans, your team will not improve until the ownership backs off on making game-day decisions that end up hurting the team than helping them, and a quarterback that cares more about throwing parties than preparing for game days.
