Former USC Trojans special teams coordinator and tight ends coach John Baxter will be joining Jim Harbaugh on the coaching staff of the Michigan Wolverines in 2015, according to a report from Football Scoop. Baxter was with the USC program from 2010-2013, and he was let go following the arrival of current head coach Steve Sarkisian.

In addition to the report that Baxter will handle special teams for the Wolverines, a Baxter camp source has confirmed to FanSided that he will also coach the team’s tight end group.

Throughout his time running the special teams for USC, Baxter’s players collected a slew of honors, including placekicker Andre Heidari being named a freshman first team All-American, as well as landing a spot on the All Pac-12 first team.

Prior to his time in Southern California, Baxter was an assistant for 13 years on the Fresno State staff, holding a variety of responsibilities, including overseeing tight ends, wide receivers, specials teams and holding the role of associate head coach.

Harbaugh is moving pretty swiftly in filling up the staff he plans to use when he begins his tenure at his alma mater in 2015, and Baxter is a big part of this process. Considered one of the best special teams coordinators in the game the past few seasons, the Michigan special teams units should be a force to be reckoned with, especially when you consider the young talent they still have on that roster. If anything, he can find a variety of ways to utilize sophomore Jabrill Peppers as he makes his return following an injury-plagued true freshman season.
