Microsoft’s new web browser reported to have Cortana built in

Some new specifications have been released about Microsoft’s new web browser.

Last week, word came out that Microsoft was working on a new web browser that would be released with Windows 10. This week, some more details about the new web browser have been revealed. According to Mashable, the codename for the web browser is Spartan. Not sure yet if that will be the actual name for the new browser yet, but we do know it will not be Internet Explorer.

One of the big features the new browser will hold is an ‘inking support’ system. This will allow Windows 10 users to be able to write or draw whatever they want on the actual web pages and be able to send their annotations to others. The feature will work with Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud platform.

While this kind of feature has been around for a few years now, no one has seemed to master it just yet. Microsoft looks like they are making an attempt at that, though. The Surface Pro 3 has a bit of the web page annotation function with the Stylis Pen and OneNote, but it is limited to what it can do on the actual web page. Spartan seems to expanding on it much more extensively.

Another big feature for the Spartan project is that they will be integrating Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant into the web browser. Cortana was released this past summer on the new Windows 8.1 smartphone. It is basically Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Siri. Cortana is a personalized, digital assistant that helps you organize, searches the web for you, learns your habits and makes suggestions for you. Cortana has been solely on the Windows smartphone, but will now be featured on this new web browser.

Another feature will include a more simplistic way of keeping your tabs together. Everyone knows the tabs on IE aren’t best, and if you have too many tabs open it can get a bit cluttered on your desktop. Well, it seems they are addressing that and will adopt a more minimalistic tabbing system much like Google Chrome’s.

Spartan is reported to be an application available at the Windows store rather than be made the default browser on Windows 10. So, I assume IE will still be the default browser for now. There still could be some compatibility issues with some programs on Spartan, which is possibly why they are keeping IE around for now.

I definitely like the sound of the new browser. IE has been a huge disappointment in the last five or so years and its put Microsoft way behind it’s competitors. This new browser seems to be Microsoft’s attempt at picking up the slack and catching up.

I mean, I’ll definitely be open to trying a browser that isn’t IE.
