Fans take Uber helicopter to National Championship game

Ohio State and Oregon battled for the right to lift the inaugural College Football Playoff trophy. 20 lucky fans had the privilege to arrive to the game in style thanks to Uber.

Thousands of college football fanatics flocked to AT&T Stadium to watch Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes face-off in the inaugural College Football Play National Championship. While ESPN delivered live coverage all day on SportsCenter and other shows, fans prepared for a long day by driving, flying, and even by helicopter. That’s right, some took a helicopter to the National Championship game via Uber.

Yes, fans paid a whopping $350 for a 45 minute ride and only twenty lucky people were included. If I was Uber, I would have had more helicopters lined up, so more money could be made. The demand looks to be there and with a low supply of helicopters, fans are lucky the price wasn’t even more expensive. It sounds kind of crazy that fans are willing to pay that much for a helicopter, but the experience is once in a lifetime opportunity to be taken by helicopter over Dallas to the National Championship game.

Uber has gotten a bad rap as of late for jacking up prices and treating both their customers and employees who drive the vehicles poorly. Yet, tonight there is no nightmare stories and the chopper option sold out in 45 minutes. It would be interesting to see how fast the inaugural National Championship game sold out compared to the Uber chopper. Most likely it took longer to sell out AT&T Stadium given there is way more than 20 seats open for the fans.

I’m curious to see if the chopper flies fans back to their initial pick-up spot. It would be crappy if Uber said we will fly you by chopper to the stadium, but have fun finding your own ride back to your ride. AT&T Stadium wouldn’t be the worst place on Earth to be stranded. At the same time, it’s something that I could see Uber do to their patrons given their bad reputation.

For 20 college football fans, they were able to witness the inaugural National Championship game and the first Uber chopper rides to AT&T stadium. Those 20 didn’t have to face the mass traffic jam into the stadium and out of the stadium when either Ohio State or Oregon lifts the first College Football Playoffs trophy.
