Nike marks Cristiano Ronaldo’s 3rd Ballon d’Or with special boot

Cristiano Ronaldo, the famed soccer star for Portugal and Real Madrid, won his third Ballon d’or Monday and Nike marked the occasion with a special boot.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the best soccer player in the world and he has the hardware to prove it.

Ronaldo, who on Monday won his second straight FIFA Ballon d’Or award as the world’s best player—the third overall of his career—is also being honored by Nike with a specially designed boot called the Mercurial CR7 Rare Gold.

The boot is gold and features the CR7 logo overlaid with micro-diamonds, remnants of larger stones that are chipped away in the refining process.

“The commitment to keep chipping away at something already impressive reminded Nike’s design team of Ronaldo’s work ethic,” Nike gushed in a press release. “While many see Ronaldo as the best in the world, he sees room for improvement.”

Real Madrid plays Atletico Madrid on Thursday in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, Spain’s annual cup competition, and Nike leads us to believe the golden boots will be on the winner of the Golden Ball.

“This exclusive pair of Mercurial CR7 Rare Gold boots will be on pitch this week, only on the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo,” the press release stated.

That is, until they can get an ever-clamoring public to drop three bills for a pair of their own.

Why the skepticism, you may ask? Because it’s Nike and its mission since the 1980s appears to be to swallow the entire sporting world.

It’s done a solid job of it, with a stock price as of Monday afternoon of $95.52 a share and total revenue for the period ending last May 31 of nearly $27.8 billion for fiscal year 2013-14.

In 29 games for Real Madrid across all competitions in 2014-15, he has 33 goals and 12 assists.

Real Madrid sits atop Spain’s La Liga with a record of 14-3-0, one point ahead of Barcelona.

Real Madrid goes into the second leg in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey trailing Atletico Madrid 2-0 in the aggregate after a loss in the opening leg on Wednesday.
