A young Ohio State fan summed up the feelings of college football fans in much of the non-southeastern part of the United States in one sign.

The vaunted Southeastern Conference is where most of us are for Monday’s College Football Playoff National Championship—watching it on the couch.

And one young Ohio State fan wanted to remind them of that.

For the first time since 2005, there won’t be an SEC representative playing for the big trophy at the end. Alabama was in the CFP, but was ushered out by Ohio State in a Sugar Bowl upset on Jan. 1.

Instead, it’s Oregon and Ohio State playing for the title—the first time the Pac-12 (or its predecessors) and the Big Ten will meet for a national title since the Bowl Championship Series began after the 1998 season.

Tennessee won the first BCS title, taking down Florida State in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl. The SEC wouldn’t be back in the title game until LSU beat Oklahoma in the 2004 Sugar Bowl and would miss the next two.

So that was two SEC appearances in the first eight BCS title games.

But when they took it over, they did it big. The SEC won every BCS championship from 2006-12 and Auburn played for the final BCS title last season.

The SEC went 9-2 overall in the BCS national championship—and one of the losses was to another SEC school, when Alabama beat LSU after the 2011 season.

But along the way, a myth began to grow. Football, it seemed, had been invented in the Deep South. It was the only region in which it could be played at the collegiate level. Every other conference was just a small pretender next to the monolith trailed by an ever-present chant of “S-E-C! S-E-C!”

Because, you know, Vanderbilt and the Mississippi schools had so much to do with that dominant era.

My fandom works differently than yours does. That’s because we’re different people.

But I would rather swallow rusty razor blades than root for a conference rival. Screw conference pride. I want to see the rest of the conference run over by the bus repeatedly.

I mean, the thought that an Alabama fan could take pride in an Auburn victory (or vice versa) almost makes my skin crawl.

As far as Monday night goes, there really can’t be a winner for me. Either the University of Nike buys a title or the Ohio State fan base becomes just a little more insufferable.

And, well, since the NCAA did away with ties for the 1996 season, that’s not even an option.

And I fully admit to being in the minority there—I have always preferred ties over using a gimmick to decide a game. And college football overtime may be second only to hockey’s shootout as a ridiculous method by which to end a game.
