The Chicago Bears are reportedly set to interview former Denver Broncos head coach John Fox.
The coaching carousel continues to grow deeper and more complicated in the NFL. Just when we thought we had all the teams in need of a coach and all the available coaches out on the field, the Denver Broncos go and ‘mutually part ways‘ with coach John Fox. This created not only a new team in need of a coach, but a new coach for the remaining teams in need.

As a result, reports have surfaced that the Chicago Bears have already pounced on Fox and scheduled an interview for him to potentially lead their club. Now that the Bears have their GM in place, relative youngster Ryan Pace, the team can turn to their coach. Pace, who has final authority over the coaching hire, reportedly has Fox high on his list, per the Chicago Tribune.
Fox would be the fourth coach to interview with the Bears as the team has already spoken with Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Dan Quinn who serves the same role with the Seattle Seahawks, and Adam Gase who was offensive coordinator for Fox’s Broncos.
In Fox, GM Ryan Pace would have a few things he wouldn’t find with those other candidates. First and foremost, he’d have head coaching experience in the ranks. Fox has a 119-89 record as head coach of the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. He also sports an 8-7 playoff record.
Additionally, Fox and Pace have familiar ties that go back to their mutual friend, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.
In all, Pace would have a tough time finding a more experienced candidate for the job than John Fox, but is it the right choice for the Bears? Fox has certainly accomplished plenty as a coach, but he’s also hit his snags along the way that should give anyone pause.
Granted, he had a strong record with the Denver Broncos, but that was a supremely talented club for most of Fox’s tenure. Where does credit for Fox end and credit for Peyton Manning begin? So can go the conundrum of having coached a great quarterback.
Those will be factors Ryan Pace has to weigh as he hones in on Fox. For now, it’s just an interview, but if Pace tabs Fox as the next guy, both team and coach will have their work cut out for them on a team in need of a re-tooled roster.
