The Denver Broncos and head coach John Fox have mutually agreed to part ways this offseason.

John Fox has been the head coach of the Denver Broncos for the past four seasons, but won’t be there for a fifth. After losing to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon, Fox and the Broncos have mutually agreed to part ways this offseason.

Denver was unable to get anything going against the Colts, and ended up being eliminated by a final score of 24-13 in the Divisional Round of the AFC Playoffs. There was no reason that the Broncos should have lost that game, but with Peyton Manning’s torn quad and a few other small holes, the Colts were able to take advantage. Fox is still a great head coach, but the team’s leadership feels he simply hasn’t taken the Broncos far enough for them to keep him around another season.

More from Denver Broncos

There is a good chance that Manning will call it a career this offseason and retire from the game of football. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see him come back, but he could go either way at this point in time. If he does decide to retire, the Broncos are going to be a completely new look team next season.

Throughout his four-year career in Denver, Fox finished with a 46-18 record and led the Broncos to four straight AFC West titles. He helped lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl last season, but ended up getting thrashed by the Seattle Seahawks by a final score of 43-8.

It is going to be very interesting to see what Denver does this offseason, and who takes over the head coaching job. Adam Gase is a name that has already been mentioned in other head coaching openings around the NFL, and it would make sense for the Broncos to promote him.

That being said, there are plenty of quality coaches on the market at this point in time. Names like Dan Quinn, Todd Bowles, Mike Shanahan, Jack Del Rio, and Pep Hamilton could be options for Denver as well.

Shanahan would be a very intriguing pickup with the history that he has in Denver, and it might end up being a good possibility. No matter what ends up being the case, Denver is heading for a major change next season with the firing of Fox.
