The Denver Broncos have reportedly requested permission to interview Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak.

Just days removed from their surprising elimination from the NFL playoffs, the Denver Broncos parted ways with coach John Fox. Now searching for a new coach to lead this talented squad back to the Super Bowl, the team has reportedly reached out to Baltimore to request permission for an interview with their offensive coordinator, Gary Kubiak.

Kubiak was a quarterback for years in the mid-to-late 1980’s for the Denver Broncos before serving from 1995-2005 as the team’s offensive coordinator. There he made enough of a name for himself to land the head coaching gig with the Houston Texans. He spent eight years in Houston before being fired after last season’s 2-14 debacle and returned to his roots as a coordinator, this time with the Baltimore Ravens.

While other teams have expressed interest in Kubiak’s services, the coach has largely panned any such move, saying he’d prefer to stay in Baltimore. However, a head coaching job in Denver, where he spent so many years as a professional, might be the one post that could legitimately lure Kubiak away from the Ravens.

Aside from his history with the team, Kubiak would find Denver to be by far the most attractive head coaching position around, provided Peyton Manning returns to play another season or two. The team has the talent to win right now, and they’re itching to do just that.

Under the offensively inclined Kubiak, Manning might find the burst of rejuvenation he needs to overcome a difficult season-ending stretch that saw him throw erratic and inconsistent passes en route to a shocking 24-13 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Kubiak makes for an attractive candidate not just because of his head coaching experience, but because of what he accomplished in his time with the Texans. He coached the first ever playoff team in franchise history, as well as secured the team’s first division title. While the wheels fell off in 2013 with Matt Schaub, Kubiak was instrumental in keeping him serviceable for many years after others may have written off the quarterback.

It’s that expertise with the quarterback position that likely most interests the Denver Broncos. Whether it’s an aging Peyton Manning or a new young face, Denver will need help with their quarterback and there are few more qualified in the league to do so than Gary Kubiak.
