Control your PC from the comfort of your iOS device

Chrome Remote Desktop has been around for Android users for some time. The tool, assuming you use their Chrome browser, allows you to remotely log in to a PC at home or the office from your phone/tablet. I’ve been using it for a long time and the performance, and convenience, is fantastic.

After installing an extension from the Chrome Webstore and an app from the App Store, you are asked to allow connections on a remote PC. Once you have installed the software, set up the connections, and set a secure password, connecting to your PC is as simple as opening the app and selecting it. You are then prompted for your password and you’ll be connected. This has helped me on more than a few occasions. I know how to open my devices on my home network to the outside world, but I don’t want to. It can sometimes be cumbersome and I’m always worried about security. Google states that all connections are fully secure. Not everyone is up for trusting Google, but I’m OK with it. The app is cross platform, which is quite nice as I have Linux, Windows, and OSX machines at home. Being able to just use this instead of trying to piece together a solution or using apps like TeamViewer makes this an incredibly useful feature.

So give it a go. The app supports multiple computers, accounts, and has gestures. It’s allowed me to reboot a Plex server that wasn’t working and access my NAS for a file I needed to reference remotely. Just be sure your PC is on, this app doesn’t provide Wake-On-LAN functionality, so it won’t be able to power on your PC remotely. Also, keep in mind that overall performance will depend on both your internet connection at home as well as whichever device you are connecting from.
