When the confetti started falling in AT&T Stadium on Monday night, there was literally not a doubt in anyone’s mind. The Ohio State Buckeyes are indeed the best team in college football, and it’s not even close.
It’s not even close, because this game against the Oregon Ducks wasn’t really all that close. When the clock ran out in regulation, Urban Meyer and his team had captured the trophy by a final score of 42-20. They contained, not shut down, the high-powered Oregon offense and were clicking on all cylinders offensively, especially in the run game.
Yep, the Buckeyes are the kings of college football after their convincing win Monday night, so with that being the case, what did we learn from Ohio State’s win over the Ducks?
3 Things We Learned
1) Urban Meyer is the best coach in college football
I know, Alabama fans, how dare I besmirch the good name of one Nick Saban, but this year proved that Meyer is the best there is in the game at coaching. He had a group filled with sophomores and freshmen, he lost his Heisman-contending starting quarterback before the season started in Braxton Miller, and not to mention, he had to replace Miller’s replacement, J.T. Barrett, when he went down against Michigan. He was dealt a lot of hands that should have made it impossible to win a national title, yet that is exactly what he did.
2) Ezekiel Elliott should probably be the Heisman front runner in 2015
The scariest part about this Ohio State team? Well, without question it’s the fact that Ezekiel Elliott is back next season on this offense. They might have a quarterback issue on their hands, but there is definitely no issue at the running back position. By torching the Ducks for 246 yards and four touchdowns on Monday night en route to the title and the offensive MVP award, Elliott made a serious statement that he is the best player in college football headed into 2015.
3) You can put the Big Ten jokes to rest now
Well, Big Ten haters, you probably aren’t feeling so well right now, and rightfully so. After bashing the northern conference for the better part of the past decade, you had to watch a team from the conference take care of Alabama, and then hold up the first ever College Football Playoff trophy. Urban Meyer did the impossible by leading a Big Ten team to a national title, something people laughed at when he took the team over in 2012.
Michigan State is a consistent power, Jim Harbaugh is getting set to take over Michigan, and now, the Ohio State Buckeyes are the kings of the college football land. Yes, find a new conference to pick on.
