Orgeron spent 2010-2013 as a member of the USC staff, including taking over as interim head coach for Lane Kiffin after Kiffin was fired from the program in September of 2013.
After 2013, USC decided to go in a different direction and hired former offensive coordinator and then Washington Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Orgeron was immensely popular in his time as interim coach, as he was well loved by fans and players alike. Now, Orgeron can go back to his home state and quickly become popular there as well.
Orgeron actually started his playing career with the Tigers, but he ultimately transferred to Northwestern State (LA). Having him join an LSU staff will be huge, as Orgeron is a guy that players want to play for and he will no doubt have a huge impact come recruiting time.
According to Rivals.com, the Tigers currently have the No. 17 recruiting class for 2015. With Orgeron jumping on board head coach Les Miles’s staff, look for that number to improve, as his personality is infectious and people want to play for a coach like him.
LSU is coming off an 8-5 record this past season and are looking to get back into the title picture, something they are more accustomed to under Les Miles.
This is a big step forward for the football program at LSU and will no doubt pay off dividends in the end. With rival schools like Alabama and Tennessee having good recruiting classes (ranked N0 1. and N0. 6 respectively), along with other schools like Georgia bringing in big time recruits, LSU has to be able to succeed to stay as one of the top in the SEC.
Other schools like Ole Miss and Mississippi State are also starting to emerge. The SEC is notoriously deep with talent and the road to an SEC championship isn’t easy. Bringing Orgeron in is a move that can help get LSU there.
