The Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator has drawn a lot of interest from NFL teams seeking a head coach

The New York Jets weren’t willing to wait for him.  Apparently the Atlanta Falcons are alright with waiting for Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn until next week.

Per si.com via Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Falcons and Quinn are said to have mutual interest in one another and is expected to be interviewed again next week after the Seahawks play the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game this Sunday.  If the Seahawks win, they will have two weeks to prepare for the Super Bowl, so Quinn would be available.

Quinn was not available this week because the team has just the one-week window between games after their win over the Panthers.  The Jets also had Quinn at the top of their short list, but apparently were unwilling to wait until next week, fearing that if Quinn didn’t take the job, then they’d lose out on Todd Bowles too.  Bowles was hired as the new Jets head coach after being the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

Quinn is currently in his second stint with the Seahawks as defensive coordinator.  He was with the team when Jim Mora was head coach and then was retained when Pete Carroll took over.  He then left for two seasons to become the defensive coordinator for the University of Florida Gators.

Quinn’s defense in Seattle was the number one ranked defense in the NFL in 2014.  His defense gave up the fewest yards in the NFL with 267.1 yards per game.  The second ranked team, the Detroit Lions, gave up 300.9 yards per game.

If hired, Quinn would be taking over a team that had the same coach in Mike Smith for the past seven years.  The Falcons defense needs help, though.  They were dead last at No. 32 in the NFL in defense, giving up 398.2 yards per game.

In addition to the Jets, it has also been widely publicized that the Denver Broncos have huge interest in Quinn as well.  The Broncos just mutually agreed to part ways with head coach John Fox on Monday after four seasons and losing to the Indianapolis Colts in their AFC divisional playoff game.

Quinn would seemingly be on other teams’ short lists as well, however the Oakland Raiders just hired former Broncos assistant Jack Del Rio today and the San Francisco 49ers seem to be leaning towards hiring former Broncos assistant Adam Gase.  That leaves the Falcons and the Broncos as the top two choices for Quinn.
