Then Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning held a ‘going back to school’ press conference similar to Cardale Jones today.

Once it was announced that Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones would announce his future plans today via press conference, we all figured he’d declare for the NFL draft.

I mean seriously, who puts on a press conference to announce to the world that you’re returning to college?

Cardale Jones does, and so does Peyton Manning.

How quickly we forget in this world of instant information and technology that the then Tennessee Volunteers quarterback brought the entire world to a stand-still to announce he would return to college for his senior season.

Actually though, these two situations couldn’t be more different.

Peyton Manning was the good-ole boy from the South. He was the All-American can’t miss prospect with the bloodlines and smarts to prove it.

Cardale Jones, on the other hand, has played three-games in his entire career and there are conflicting views on where he would be drafted. If a team took him, they’d have to make sure they are in a position to allow him to sit the first couple of years and hope a grooming situation is evident.

Why in the world was there even a press conference today? Nobody really cares aside from the fact that it’s fresh off the National Title Game. It’s a huge gamble by Jones, when nothing is seemingly guaranteed for him, even the starting quarterback job at Ohio State.

As far as Manning was concerned, many cared, especially the New York Jets, who with Bill Parcells taking the helm in 1997 would have drafted him had he come out after his junior season.

But, as most know by now, good things don’t happen to the Jets.
