South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier nearly retired this season after going through another season of tough losses.

Steve Spurrier is a legendary college head coach, but the road always ends no matter who you are. The only difference between the bright legends and the accidental ones are those who see the end coming — and Spurrier is very much in the latter category.

After yet another tough season at South Carolina, the Gamecocks head coach nearly decided to turn in his coaching badge and ride off into the sunset at the end of 2014.

According to Chris Low from ESPN.com, the legendary college coach nearly called it quits after this past season but decided he wasn’t done with the world of college football — yet.

When you do it as long as I have, and you lose games the way we did this year, you have those thoughts that maybe it’s time to let somebody else come in here and do this,” Spurrier said to Low. “You wonder, ‘What I am I doing?’ That’s only normal, but I think everybody knows now that I’ve still got four or five more years in me.”

Spurrier won’t be coaching forever, but he’s not the first coach to so seriously doubt his own talents. All great professionals are in constant doubt of their own skills, which is what helps them strive for continued greatness.

A career in the NFL doesn’t seem likely again for Spurrier, which means retiring from South Carolina would likely be the end of the line for the coach. He’s a sure-fire Hall of Famer, but there is still gas left in the tank which is going to be sucked dry before he goes off an retires.

Spurrier hasn’t alway shad the best time at South Carolina and the Gamecocks have yet to play for a National Championship under his rule. There’s still time for that though, as this moment of crisis that saw Spurrier contemplate retirement seems to have passed and it’s back to business as usual for the long time coach.

This doesn’t mean he has longevity on his side, but the Gamecocks will have at least one more season with Spurrier in charge. Success won’t be easy to come by, but with Spurrier leading the way, South Carolina is in the most capable hands they could hope for.
