The 2013 American League Cy Young Award Winner has reportedly signed a seven-year contract worth at least $180 million, according to SB Nation.
It had been documented throughout the off-season that agent Scott Boras was looking for a deal in excess of $200 million for Scherzer, but unfortunately, it appeared that he was unable to lure teams such as Detriot, New York, Boston, and Toronto far enough into talks to where such a contract would be possible.
Still, the per year amount Scherzer is set to earn is right on par with just about any pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw.
Read out this assortment of riches. Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmerman, Tanner Roark, Doug Fister, and Gio Gonzalez. Looks more like a potential all-star team, right? Well, that is what Washington will potentially be throwing at the league in 2015, which means that if you are the manager of an opposing ball club, your line-up has no break.
No more series’ where teams get a reprieve from elite pitching. That is the trump card the Nationals are looking to ride into October, and perhaps to finally get over the hump of the NLCS.
