Barry Sanders is remembered as being one of the most modest and humblest players in NFL history, but the myth of why he never celebrated has been busted.

Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders is best remembered for his ankle breaking runs that boggled minds and shatter joints of defenders during his short career. He only played a handful of years in the NFL but is still one of the greatest running backs to have ever graced the league.

One of the reasons Barry Sanders is so loved is because he’s remembered for being humble in an age of showboats and self promotion. There was no Sharpie celebration for Sanders, there was no putting wit the pylon — in fact, there was no celebrating at all for Sanders during his career.

All Sanders did was handed the ball to the referee and went about his business. He didn’t even flip the ball, he handed it to the official.

In a recent chat with TMZ paparazzi, Barry Sanders revealed the real reason why he never danced after any of his touchdowns — and it’s not as modest as you think.

Of course, there’s a lot to doubt about that statement. Over the course of his career, are we really supposed to believe that Sanders never once learned how dow dance for his wife? His teammates never showed him any moves or gave him alternate celebrating techniques?

The biggest hole in this Barry Sanders can’t dance theory is seen in Sanders play — he literally danced around opponents for a living. Dancing his way out of tackles and around defenders is why Barry Sanders is a legend today and why his highlight reels still give fans goosebumps.

So while Sanders may be learning how to be a showman in retirement, clearly, the notion that he was only modest because he couldn’t dance is something we can consider as being tongue-in-cheek.
