FA Cup, Cambridge v Manchester Utd: Red Devil Player Ratings

Manchester United were held to a scoreless draw against Cambridge United in their FA Cup match.

Manchester United were away to Cambridge United in the fourth round of the FA Cup tonight. The Red Devils were expected to run away with the game and to coast past the League Two side. However that did not seem to be the case in the first half as the Premier League team left a lot to be desired.

The two teams were only separated by reputations, because the style of play and penetration was non existent on both sides. Cambridge failed to test De Gea all half as he only touchhed the ball at kick outs and one catch from a bad ball played forward. They came close to a lucky goal as a result of a game of pin ball after a corner, the ball scrambled around the 6 yard box before being headed over.

Man Utd weren’t a lot better in offense as they had to settle for pop shots at the edge of the box. Wilson and Falcao were non existent for the most part. Januzaj hesitated after being played in by Angel Di Maria, resulting in the ball being given away right before the referee blew the half time whistle.

Over all the first half was a shocking game of football and not what the FA cup is all about.

Sadly the second half wasn’t much better. It was spent entirely in Cambridge’s half and was an awful display of attacking from Man Utd. They rarely tested the keeper with any conviction, and you can’t blame Cambridge for sitting back and inviting pressure as the game went on. Ander Herrara ignited a spark of life into the team when he came on, linking up nicely with Di Maria on a few occasions.

The fact that Manchester United failed to beat League Two side (4th division in English Football) is a shambles. It’s not like they started with a weak team, starting the likes of De Gea, Falcao, Di Maria and arguably their strongest defense available.  Chances are Cambridge will go to Old Trafford in the replay and be walked all over, as so often happens with fairytale replays. Despite this, it’s still an embarrassment for Manchester Utd that not only did they fail to win, they failed to score.

Well done to Cambridge Utd for earning another day out against a far superior opposition, they have truly earned their replay.

With that being said, we graded the United player’s performance throughout the game:
