The Minnesota Timberwolves may be without point guard Ricky Rubio for the rest of the season as he battles an injury much worse than initially diagnosed.

When the Minnesota Timberwolves lost Ricky Rubio to an ankle injury, it was expected that he’d take his time getting back but would indeed eventually be back. That hasn’t been the case though and it’s looking like Rubio may be out even longer than it was first thought.

According to Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press, the injury to Ricky Rubio may be more serious than the Minnesota Timberwolves initially thought.

"”It’s a very unique ankle sprain,” Saunders said. ”They said at the time it’s going to be worse than a high ankle sprain, and everyone knows those go eight to 12 weeks. So it has nothing to do with him not wanting to play.”"

It’s not directly stated that Rubio may miss the rest of the season, but it’s being heavily implied that he may miss several more months thanks to the discovery of this muscle and ligament image. As we rapidly approach February, there are only two full months left in the season and bringing back Rubio to a Wolves team that is going nowhere makes little to no sense.

It may be nice to have the star back, but his $55 million contract extension doesn’t kick in until 2015-16, meaning he could miss the rest of this season and not have it greatly effect his value to the team with that new deal. What could effect that new deal is if he returns too soon and further injures himself or never fully recovers properly.

That’s the last thing the Timberwolves need as they finally have a flash of promise with rookie Andrew Wiggins which is something Rubio can play into. He can’t do that if he’s battling this ankle issue as the Wolves are best off letting him rest the remainder of the season and come back in 2015-16 ready to be the leader his $55 million contract suggests he will be.
