The Falcons have been preparing to hire Seahawks DC Dan Quinn for a few weeks now and it appears to be all but a done deal, only waiting for the conclusion of the Super Bowl, per NFL rules.
According to D. Orlando Ledbetter of AJC.com, it’s a matter of when an no longer if the Falcons are going to hire Quinn as their head coach.
"“Quinn will coach in the Super Bowl as defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks before being officially named the Falcons head coach on Monday, Feb. 2 in Atlanta. He’s expected to call the defensive plays.”"
Previously the Jets were reported to be extremely interested in Quinn, even rumored to be ready to fly out to Seattle if the Seahawks had lost the Divisional game against the Panthers, but ultimately were unable to wait when the Seahawks won and the Jets named a new GM. Quinn interviewed with the Falcons in early January, as did former Jets coach Rex Ryan. Ryan was initially reported to be considered as the frontrunner for the job, but eventually took a position with the Bills after the Falcons were “dragging their feet.”
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said recently that he thinks the league should change its hiring rules concerning teams wanting to hire assistants from teams still in the postseason. In many ways, a rule change would help both the hiring team and the team about to lose a coach. He’s not wrong either as the Falcons and Seahawks are both going to be affected by Quinn’s hiring as the Falcons are the last team to hire a head coach and fill out a staff while the Seahawks need to find a replacement for Quinn after the coordinator pool has already been sucked dry.
Carroll had the following to say about Quinn in advance of his unofficial hiring by the Falcons.
Either way, the Falcons are getting an ace head coach in Quinn, who may be trying this out for the first time but has amassed a reputation that precedes him thanks to the Legion of Boom and the credibility around the NFL that has given him.
