The 33-year-old has been in fine form for Real Madrid this season as they occupy the top of La Liga while he still has two years left on his contract, but the Spaniard didn’t rule out a future move in a recent interview.
“I have no problem saying that I would like to play in the U.S,” Casillas said.
And having played for Real Madrid his whole life, there is one appealing thing about the MLS for Casillas.
“They are unlikely to be in direct competition with Real Madrid.”
Take note, Frank Lampard.
Could it happen though? At the start of the season, we could see Casillas leaving; he was dropped last season for La Liga games and despite Madrid winning La Decima, Casillas was suspect throughout the entire game, with his mistake leading to Diego Godin’s goal.
He then proceeded to have a disastrous World Cup campaign as Spain crashed out in the group stages with Casillas notably at fault during La Roja‘s heavy 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands. To further add fuel to a possible departure for Casillas, Real Madrid signed Costa Rica goalkeeper, Keylor Navas who got rave reviews for his performances in Brazil.
However, Casillas got the faith of manager Carlo Ancelotti, starting most La Liga and Champions League games despite faltering at the start of the season. He has now proceeded to change his year around with some impressive performances.
It’s hard to see him leave now but it could be a possibility when his contract runs out.
Where would you like to see him play? Let us know in the comments!
